The Marcus High School Orchestra
Marcus High School is fed by three middle schools and seven elementary schools. Orchestra instruction begins in the sixth grade at Briarhill and Downing Middle Schools, and is currently slated to be added at Lamar Middle School beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.
The Marcus Orchestra has 80+ members in three performing ensembles based on skill level. Chamber Orchestra, Sinfonia Orchestra, and Philharmonic Orchestra are year-long classes that meet daily for ninety minutes. All orchestras prepare several performances throughout the year, and participate in the annual UIL Concert & Sightreading Evaluation in February. Students combine to perform at the annual Marcus Cluster Orchestra Concert, as well as an annual spring trip. In addition, many students participate in TMEA All-Region and All-State Orchestra auditions, UIL Solo & Ensemble, and LISD Solo & Ensemble. All students participate in the study of chamber music, and explore non-traditional music for the Spring Pops Concert.
The Marcus Orchestra has a history of top ratings at UIL, as well as numerous accolades at festivals around the state and country. The orchestra has participated in clinics at Northwestern University, and has performed at The Field Museum in Chicago, Illinois.
The Marcus Orchestra is supported by our incredible parent organization, the Marcus Orchestra Boosters, who work tirelessly each year to provide a fantastic experience to the students in the Marcus Orchestra program.
